Life for Steve was turned upside-down last year when Guillain-Barr\u00e9 syndrome suddenly left him in intensive care on a ventilator with very limited movements in all four limbs. His independence was gone and he was left facing the isolation and uncertainty of many long months of rehabilitation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The hospital alerted us to see if we could help, and after working together with their occupational therapy team to assess his abilities via a video call, Liz and Hannah from our StarGaze<\/a> team sent him a carefully selected range of access equipment and personalised software that had the potential to offer him a vital degree of independence.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe SpecialEffect team were introduced to me by the hospital OT team at a time when I was almost totally disabled,\u201d said Steve. \u201cThey were very approachable, lovely to talk\u00a0to and\u00a0immediately understood my situation.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey came up with a solution using push buttons attached to a computer that I could operate with my head and my one working foot.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u00a0was\u00a0life-changing.\u00a0I was able to\u00a0listen to my\u00a0radio stations,\u00a0read\u00a0my eBooks and\u00a0watch\u00a0YouTube.\u00a0It\u00a0gave me back the first little bit of independence\u00a0and control over my life, something I could mentally grab hold\u00a0of and\u00a0build on.\u00a0I\u00a0can’t express what a difference\u00a0it\u00a0made.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ll never forget what your team did for me.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Our team continued to support Steve\u00a0when\u00a0he moved onto rehabilitation. His\u00a0mobility improved\u00a0until he was eventually\u00a0able to access his computer without the need to use\u00a0our\u00a0specialist software\u00a0and\u00a0switches,\u00a0so\u00a0we\u2019re\u00a0currently\u00a0helping him to\u00a0access Minecraft\u00a0and other PC games\u00a0comfortably and independently\u202fas he regains finer movements.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019re so happy that\u00a0Steve\u2019s\u00a0quality of life has been boosted by\u00a0our\u00a0support and loan equipment.\u00a0As with all our support, we\u2019ll\u00a0continue to\u00a0be there for him\u00a0if and when\u00a0needed\u00a0as his\u00a0abilities change\u202ffurther during\u00a0his\u00a0recovery.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
